Healing For Health Professionals: the Opposite of Burn Out
What is healing? Many of us in the Healing Professions sense something is missing in our professional education and practice. Most of us, maybe all of us, are in various stages of burn-out from our professional careers. How can we authentically practice Medicine, Psychology, Nursing, Care-taking, and other modes of healing practice and realize our intention to help? "Healing for Health Professionals" approaches this in two surprisingly synergistic ways. We conduct Balint Groups which for more than 70 years have trained physicians in empathic understanding. Balint groups explore emotional and less conscious aspects of practitioner-patient/client relationships.https://americanbalintsociety.org.

In parallel we teach the wisdom and caring of Tarthang Tulku's most recent books, best described as secular Buddhism. This course, over a 12 week span, alternating inquiry and Balint sessions, gives space and support to explore how these concepts play out and what they mean to each person. The Balint group process develops over the course and is grounded in confidentiality.

We ask all participants to make the following commitments for the Balint part of the class
-to attend every one of the 6 Balint group sessions
-to have a quiet, private space for all the sessions
-to have adequate wifi to join with both video and audio during the 90 min sessions
If you are not sure you can attend all 6 Balint sessions, please contact Ellen Barnett:
docellenimc@gmail.com and she will reach out to you for a brief conversation.

Course Objectives

At the end of the Balint training, attendees will be able to:

1. Discuss the impact of provider reflection and self-care on clinical practice

2. Identify aspects of challenging practitioner-client relationships that affect

your practice

3. Explain the importance of compassion for the resilience of practitioners

4. Formulate different options for handling challenging patient encounters

5. Describe the usefulness of the group process for members of a Balint

group

6. Describe the usefulness of the group process for the presenter of a case

7. Differentiate Balint group work from conventional case consultation

8. Identify your own responses to language related to diversity and ‘otherness’

of patients

9. Identify your own responses to language related to diversity and

‘otherness’ of colleagues

Course Objectives for inquiry sessions

At the end of each inquiry session participants will have considered their own response to the question posed that week and how their responses affect their practice. Questions include: What is healing? What is burnout? What is moral injury? What is the effect of a Problem List? What happens when I see my patient as ’other’? How will I take what I’ve learned in this class ‘ home’ and incorporate elements into my practice?

The curriculum is appropriate for physicians (primary care, psychiatry, other specialists), psychologists, social workers, and other mental health care providers.
