Healing For Health Professionals: the Opposite of Burn Out
Course Objectives
At the end of the Balint training, attendees will be able to:
1. Discuss the impact of provider reflection and self-care on clinical practice
2. Identify aspects of challenging practitioner-client relationships that affect
your practice
3. Explain the importance of compassion for the resilience of practitioners
4. Formulate different options for handling challenging patient encounters
5. Describe the usefulness of the group process for members of a Balint
group
6. Describe the usefulness of the group process for the presenter of a case
7. Differentiate Balint group work from conventional case consultation
8. Identify your own responses to language related to diversity and ‘otherness’
of patients
9. Identify your own responses to language related to diversity and
‘otherness’ of colleagues
Course Objectives for inquiry sessions
At the end of each inquiry session participants will have considered their own response to the question posed that week and how their responses affect their practice. Questions include: What is healing? What is burnout? What is moral injury? What is the effect of a Problem List? What happens when I see my patient as ’other’? How will I take what I’ve learned in this class ‘ home’ and incorporate elements into my practice?
The curriculum is appropriate for physicians (primary care, psychiatry, other specialists), psychologists, social workers, and other mental health care providers.
The AAFP has reviewed Healing for Health Professionals and deemed it acceptable for up to 18.00 Live AAFP Prescribed credits. Term of Approval is from 02/03/2022 to 11/17/2022. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. AAFP prescribed credit is accepted by the American Medical Association as equivalent to AMA PRA Category 1 credit toward the AMA Physicians Recognition Award.
The American Balint Society is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. The American Balint Society maintains responsibility for this program and its content. This activity is approved for 7.75 CE credits. The Board of Behavioral Science Examiners allows MFTs and LCSWs to claim credit for courses offered by APA approved providers.
